Neurodevelopmental disorders are a class of disorders that affect neurological development and brain function, leading to problems with social, cognitive, and emotional functioning.
Neurodevelopmental disorders are a class of disorders that affect neurological development and brain function, leading to problems with social, cognitive, and emotional functioning. The two most prevalent Neurodevelopmental Disorders are Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and Autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Many NDs are not as well-researched or well-known.
The majority of people with Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDs) are infants, kids, and teenagers. However, NDs can persist into adulthood or may go undiagnosed until one is an adult. There are cases where a youngster outgrows the symptoms associated with an ND.
Types of Neurodevelopmental Disorder:
Although there are many distinct kinds of NDs, the following are some of the more common ones:
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects both children and adults. It’s characterized by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that can interfere with daily functioning or development.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction, along with restricted and repetitive patterns of behaviors, interests, or activities. ASD is considered a “spectrum” because it manifests in a wide range of symptoms and severity levels, leading to significant individual variation.
Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a group of permanent movement disorders that appear in early childhood. It is a neurological condition that affects muscle coordination and body movement. The term “cerebral” refers to the brain, and “palsy” refers to weakness or problems with muscle control.
CP is caused by damage to the developing brain, typically occurring before or during birth, or during the first few years of life. The damage can result from various factors, including prenatal infections, complications during childbirth, genetic factors, or problems with brain development.
A communication disorder refers to a condition in which an individual has difficulty with the comprehension or expression of spoken, written, or other forms of communication. These disorders can affect various aspects of communication, including language, speech, and social interaction. Communication disorders can manifest in both children and adults, and they may be developmental or acquired.
Conduct Disorder (CD) is a psychiatric condition characterized by a pattern of repetitive and persistent behaviors that violate the basic rights of others or societal norms. It often emerges in childhood or adolescence and can have significant implications for the individual’s social, academic, and occupational functioning. The behaviors associated with Conduct Disorder are more severe and persistent than typical childhood mischief.
Intellectual disabilities, also known as intellectual developmental disorders, are a group of conditions characterized by limitations in intellectual functioning and adaptive behaviors. These limitations often manifest during the developmental period, and individuals with intellectual disabilities may face challenges in areas such as communication, learning, self-care, and social skills. The severity of intellectual disabilities can vary widely, and they are classified into different levels based on the degree of impairment.
A learning disorder, also known as a learning disability, is a neurological condition that affects a person’s ability to acquire, process, store, and produce information. These disorders can impact various skills such as reading, writing, mathematics, and reasoning. It’s important to note that learning disorders are not indicative of a person’s intelligence; individuals with learning disorders often have average or above-average intelligence.
Neurodevelopmental motor disorders are a group of conditions that affect a person’s ability to move and control their muscles. These disorders typically emerge during the developmental period and result from abnormalities in the nervous system’s growth and development.
Global Developmental Delay (GDD) is a term used to describe a condition in which a child does not reach developmental milestones within the expected age range across multiple areas of functioning. These areas typically include motor skills, cognitive skills, speech and language skills, social and emotional skills, and activities of daily living.
